BODY SHAMING BOYS

It’s not just girls that struggle with body shaming,boys also faces the same pressure.

Ade (not his real name) shared how as teenage boys in school, during recess would gather in the toilet where boys would access each other’s penis size, of course it’s demoralizing when other boys poke fun at the size of your penis especially when it is considered small.

Ikenna( not his real name) shared how he constantly felt bad about his body because he wasn’t growing enough facial hairs and muscles and he was pained by it.

David ( not his real name) constantly winned about his fat body and how other kids taunt him in school about his size and called him names.

One of the common body disorder you find in boys is MUSCLE DYSMORPHIA which focuses on boys concern over MUSCLE development. Researcher Harrison G.Pope revealed this in his research work.

Do you know unlike girls,boys fixation is on how to acquire more muscle which leads to eating disorder and drug abuse, especially abuse of steriods.

If you notice in suburban area of Lagos ,you will see the rise of street gym center catering for the needs of boys who engage in body building daily.

SHAMING from the Oxford dictionary is defined as causing someone to feel inadequate. So shaming a child’s body gives them a sense of negative image about their body types.

CONSEQUENCE OF BODY SHAMING

Imagine a boy who is constantly feeling something is wrong with his body….

1- He will battle low self-esteem.

2-Eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.

3-Drug and substance abuse.

4-Anti- social syndrome.

5-Depression.

6- Sucide.

7- Obessive thoughts about self image.

8-Bullying

9- Behavioural disorder.

10-Mental disorder.

BOYS GET BODY SHAMED FOR BEING…..

A- Too fat

B- Too thin

C-Little muscles.

D-Small chest.

E- Feminine voice.

F-Height.

G- Acne and other related skin disease.

H-Not enough facial hair

I- Penile Size.

K- Not hairy

HOW BOYS CAN LEARN TO APPRECIATE THEIR BODIES.

∆- Teach them to accept and admire their body .

∆- Allow boys express how they feel about their bodies.

∆-Boys should focus more on acquiring skills than appearance.

∆-Encourage healthy habits such as eating right,excercise,hyigene and dressing smartly.

∆- Constantly pour out positive affirmation on your son.

∆- Raise boys never to condone or accept negative words in regard to their bodies.

HELPING BOYS UNDERSTAND BODY TYPES

1-Bodies come in different shapes and sizes.

2-The body needs constant care physically, spiritually and emotionally.

3-Explain how the body works.

4-Help boys navigate changes during puberty stages.

5- Boys need to understand what is sex and sexuality.

6- They must have respect for their bodies.

7- They must respect private body parts of others.

Body shaming a boy can stay into adulthood,lots of men still suffer from low self -esteem over their bodies.
